996 - was the year of the foundation of St.Martin
Benedictine Monastery. The first monks arrived from
Brevnov. They were helped by St.Adalbert, the bishop of
Prague. The monks settled on the hill, where Árpád and
the conquering Hungarian chieftains stood before, as
mentioned by Anonymus, in his famous chronicle of the
Hungarians, Gesta Hungarorum. The foundation of the
monastery at the same time means the beginning of public
education in Hungary, thus the millecentenary event
organised by the Abbey commemorates the 1100th
anniversary of the Hungarian Conquest and the 1000 years
old Hungarian education at the same time.
