Abstract

The studies on the lithic material from the period later than Paleolithic were, especially for the continental par of Croatia almost completely absent until the last few years. As a result of that, the data about the production and use of stone tools are almost completely unknown. For the Neolithic sites, some basic technological and typological analyses were made, but with no detailed analysis yet, especially in terms of use wear studies or the provenance of the raw material. For the continental part of the country the locations of raw materials used in these periods are almost completely unknown also. Secondary deposits in the rivers of Drava and Sava are known, and in some periods these deposits were quite frequently used. Some general observations were made, for example predominance of radiolarites on the early Neolithic sites, and more various raw material (radiolarites, flint, limnic quartzites) on later Neolithic sites.

The composition of the assemblage on many sites though, suggests the existence of the raw material sources in primary deposits in the vicinity and on territory of the present day Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hopefully, we will prove that existence soon as there is a field survey recently started in the search for that kind of location. In this talk, types of the raw material found on archaeological sites will be presented and possible sources of those raw material types will be pointed out. Issues and perspectives in provenance studies for continental Croatia will be addressed.
