Subject: Re: marble quarries in slovenia?

Dear Katalin,

It took me a while to ask around for ancient marble quarries, but unfortunately it seems that my coleagues are not aware of any besides the "Roman quarry" near Slovenska Bistrica that you already know.

However, I have checked one recent book about archeology, which mentions the surroundings of Smartno na Pohorju as the (probably) most important source of marble for Roman monuments. Smartno is about 5 km north of Slovenska Bistrica, as the crow flies. (Probably you should contact Slovenian archeologists for more info about that; unfortunately I do not know any)

Otherwise, the marble is known to be most abundant north of Smartno na Pohorju, and between Vitanje and Zrece (St. Kunigunda). There are supposedly two old quarries along the road leading from Zrece towards the NE along the river Dravinja. You will probably need the 1:50.000 scale map (perhaps the big atlas of Slovenia) to find your way around, since it is mainly backcountry with narrow village roads. (For the NE-of-Zrece-quarry, see the attached map).

Hope this helps...

Best regards,

Marko Vrabec
