In Bratislava 5th workshop of the IGCP No. 442 will be organised in the frame of the XVIIth Congress of Carpathian-Balkan Geological Association. Participants of the workshop IGCP 442 ought communicate with the leader of the IGCP 442, not organization committe of the Congress CBGA! Registration fee participants of the 5th workshop of the IGCP No. 442 will pay following instruction in this circular! For participants of the 5th workshop of the IGCP 442 no payment of registration fee for the CBGA Congress is needed!

In the case that till 30th April 2002 less participants as 20 will pay the registration fee, the workshop will be cancelled and registration fees will be refunded in full to all.

Břeclav-Pohansko -An important Slavonic settlement between 6th and 10th century A. D. in south Moravia, a fortress in the period of Great-Moravian Empire, now a field workplace of the Institute of Archaeology and Museology, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. Exhibition of used stone building materials, stone raw materials for millstones and whorls. Guided by J. Macháček from the Institute of Archaeology and Museology, M.U. Brno.

12.30 - Břeclav – lunch

14.30 - Dolní Věstonice - Field workplace of Archaeological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and archaeological exposition.

One of the most famous Paleolithic sites in the world discovered by Karel Absolon. Large number of stone and bone finds from the archaeological period of Pavlovian (early phase of Gravettian, 32 000 –25 000 BC). The Věstonice Venus – a small statue of a woman modelled in clay heated in fire. Raw materials of chipped artefacts and their provenience. Making of polished artefacts roughly 15 000 years before the Neolithic. Reconstruction of a grave of three young persons discovered in 1986. Using of red pigments and their origin.

A relict of Jurassic limestones with homogenous and striped cherts. The oldest traces of the hominids Homo erectus including using of fire in central Europe. Mining of cherts in the period of Funnel Beaker culture.

10.00 - Brno – Pisárky

Exhibition hall Anthropos with an exposition about origin and development of the mankind. Guided by M. Oliva, chief of the Anthropos Instituon.

12.00 - Želešice near Brno

Recent quarry in greenschists of the Brno massif. Sampling, exhibition of field measurement of magnetic susceptibility and determination of K, U a Th by portable gamma ray spectrometer. Using of the Želešice greenschists in prehistoric times.

13.00 - Lunch.

15.00 - Prehistoric mines for cherts in the area of Krumlovský les

The mining area of approx. 100 hectares contains 9 extraction fields with adjacent workshops. Distribution of the Krumlovský les chert in prehistoric times. Guided by M. Oliva.

18.00 - Arrival to Šlapanice.

Excursion to the southern part of the Moravian Karst

9.00 - The cave of Pekárna

Important finds of Magdalenian arts, sources of raw materials for chipped artefacts in the Moravain Karst, imported raw materials from the area of continental glaciation and southern Poland

10.30 - The Býčí skála cave

A famous offering place from the Hallstatt Period with numerous human sacrifices and plenty finds of iron, bronze, gold, stone, bone and pottery objects, amber and glass jewels. Petrographic investigation of so called “burnt limestone“. Prehistoric mining and metallurgy of local iron ores.

Offered papers and extended abstracts ought to be concentrated on the problematic of the raw material of the Neolithic polished stone industry.

1) Papers in frame of the IGCP/UNESCO 442 Project.

Project leader offer to all Project participants possibility to publish papers in scientific journal "Geologica carpathica – Special Issue" (see Instructions to authors http://nic.savba.sk/sav/inst/geol/GCuvod.htm ). Notice: those authors who will send papers in extenso, they are invited to send extended abstract, too.

2) Extended abstracts

Extend: 3 standard pages. Abstracts should be arranged as follows: title, authors (+adress), text, references (+ max. 2 Figs includ.)

Authors are asked to submit papers together with the hard-copy also in electronic form processed by IBM compatible computers. Only 3,5“ disks are accepted. Preferred formats for text is MS WORD and for graphics are BMP, PCX, CDR, TIF and JPG.

If did you published in 2001/2002 scientific paper with the logo of the Project IGCP 442 or do you have such paper accepted in any scientific journal, or you will offer such paper to any redaction, let me (D. Hovorka) know it. Send me reprints of already published papers, please.
