Vörs-Máriaasszonysziget is located close to the south-western corner of Lake Balaton in the marshes called Kis-Balaton. Preceding the reconstruction of the marshes several campaigns of rescue excavations took place on the site in the early 1990-ies. These works resulted in the discovery of Early Neolithic material belonging to the Starčevo culture, one of the most important proofs of the Northern expansion of the culture. The site is located at the northernmost known boundary of the culture, its significance is therefore essential for the neolithisation of the Carpathian Basin. Therefore following the rescue excavations, a new excavation project was initiated and performed recently (1999-2000). Apart from the Early Neolithic material, features and finds of 7 more archaeological cultures were found. The aim of the current OTKA project is to perform the complete elaboration of the evidence with special regard to archaeological science (archaeometry, geography, biology). We are planning to prepare a manuscript ready for publication in monographic form within the four years of the project. The expected results can shed new light on the formation of productive economies on the territory of the Carpathian Basin and can contribute to the cognisance on the region exceptionally rich in archaeological finds.
